Is The Callanetics Exercise Method a weight loss program?

Not directly. Callanetics increases lean body mass resulting in higher per hour metabolic burn rate of calories. This can profoundly restrict the body's tendency to produce fat tissue and may even cause your body to burn fat for energy once your muscles become more toned and your resting metabolic rate has increased. Because of the unique toning abilities of Callanetics exercises, which cause a tremendous pulling in, and re-shaping of your body so quickly, it gives the appearance of significant weight loss. Women commonly lose two sizes without any weight loss at all.

Our new CardioCallanetics program does directly affect a person’s weight loss because it is designed to increase fat burning. It actually burns more fat than traditional low impact aerobics classes because the movements are done slower utilizing a fuller range of motion requiring more muscle fibers to be engaged.

Combining Callanetics Exercises with CardioCallanetics program will have a weight loss effect as long as you are not taking in more calories than you are burning. Bottom line, you will lose weight if you do not increase how much you eat (caloric intake) after you begin to exercise doing the above programs.

How often should I work out to get fast results?

It depends on your goals. If you have more than 15 pounds to lose or if you want to tone quickly for an upcoming event, we recommend 6 days per week; do 3 CardioCallanetics (30 minutes of cardio plus the 35 minutes of toning) programs Monday, Wednesday, Friday and then the Callanetics Evolution program (entire 65 minute toning program) on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and take Sunday off. Do this until you meet your goal size then you can maintain on one or two programs per week.

Is it safe to do everyday?

Yes, it is safe to do everyday but it is best to allow the body 1-2 days of rest per week. This enables your body to have more available energy on the days you work out.

Is it safe to do if I am pregnant?

That question can only be answered by you and your medical practitioner. It depends upon your health at the time of your pregnancy which only you and your doctor know. Most healthy pregnant women are encouraged by their health practitioners to have regular exercise throughout their pregnancies. We have had many of our Certified Callanetics Teachers as well as students do the exercises throughout their pregnancy’s with the approval of their medical practitioners.

Do I need to be coordinated to do these exercises?

No, in fact doing The Callanetics Exercise Method will give you better balance, coordination and body awareness. It is designed to work on anyone and does!

Do I have to wear special clothing?

No, but we recommend wearing something that you can see your muscles working in. Seeing, along with feeling your muscles working, help to get your mind-body connection re-connected.

How is the “Callanetics Evolution” program different from the original program?

Callanetics Evolution is a combination of the original exercises along with some new ones. After years of questions from all the many devoted Callanetics fans who asked about the foundation of the exercises, Callan wrote an in depth explanation how she discovered what happens to people over time with poor posture, stress and lack of exercise and how to “undue” it all and re-awaken our bodies as if we were children again. The Callanetics Concepts included in the DVD discusses this and more by bringing awareness of our pelvic floor muscles, alignment with counter poles, relaxation, and new dimensions in pulsing to activate muscle confusion. This awakens our natural alignment and postural muscles once again so we can have the freedom of movement like a child but with the adult body you’ve always dreamed of .

The original programs work great and have changed millions of bodies for going on 30 years. Is there a lot of jumping and jarring in CardioCallanetics?

No there isn’t any jumping or jarring in fact, you can do the program in bare feet! It stays true to Callan’s philosophy of meditation in motion combining the fluidity of ballet and yoga into a rhythmic workout which is done slower do you get a fuller range of motion that is safer and burns more fat than traditional low impact aerobics. Callan’s years of ballet training had a tremendous influence on the program and to watch it you get the idea that it is not much of a workout but once you try it, you immediately feel the demand on your muscles and the fat melting off!  Many who complained of being uncoordinated say they feel so graceful when doing this program and that their balance increased significantly. Also, there are three levels of intensity to follow so no matter what level you are you will know just what to do.
